Worrying About the Future

In the movie Back to the Future II, a number of predictions are made about what the future -- specifically the year 2015 -- would look like. Some of them come true: flat screen TVs, video conference technology, 3D, drones, and yes, even the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series, albeit it actually happened in 2016. However, there are some things the movie gets wrong, such as flying cars.

Do you ever stop and think: What will my future look like in 5 years, 10 years, even 25 years from now?

We may think we have our future all mapped out, but then things change. We find something to worry about, and it can drain our faith.

Worry is a common temptation in life. We can worry about our health. We can worry about our job. We can worry about our finances. We can worry about our family. We can worry about the church.

Jesus simply says in Matt. 6:31: "Therefore do not worry." It's not a suggestion or a recommendation. It's a command from our Savior. Jesus goes on to explain in v. 32 that "your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things." He knows what we need to sustain us from day to day. Let's not forget: He created us.

David writes in Psalm 37:25-26: "I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lends; and his descendants are blessed."

If you go through stretches in your life where there's uncertainty, think of how God has been good to you. Pray to Him. Trust Him. Lean on His understanding. Acknowledge Him. Allow Him to direct your steps.

"Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." -- I Pet. 5:7
